Susanne Martin (PhD))
is a Berlin based artist and researcher in the field of contemporary dance. She creates performances internationally as soloist and in collaboration with Bronja Novak (Göteborg), Gabriele Reuter (Berlin), Theater M21 (Göttingen) and others. Her artistic practice and research focuses on improvisation, contact improvisation, narrations of the aging body, humour and irony in dance, and performance as research. Her book Dancing Age(ing): Rethinking Age(ing) in and through Improvisation Practice and Performance has been published by transcript in February 2017.

Susanne Martin is a Berlin based choreographer, performer, researcher, and teacher in the field of contemporary dance and theatre. She presents her work internationally in solo performances and collaborative stage works. Her artistic practice and research focuses on improvisation, contact improvisation, narrations of the aging body, humour and irony in dance, and performance as research.

2017 Her book Dancing Age(ing) is published by transcript. She presents her research internationally at academic conferences.

Her piece Von der Schönheit und Seltsamkeit des Anlehnens, co-choreographed with Eliane Hutmacher wins in the national competition „Tanztreffen der Jugend“.

2016 Susanne complets her PhD Dancing Age(ing), creats a duet with voice artist Alex Nowitz and and starts the monthly performance series 7 Minutes of Fame.

2015 She premiers the solo The Fountain of Age in London as practical part of her PhD dissertation.

2014 The Fountain of Youth runs again in Sweden and in London as practical part of her PhD dissertation.

2013 She premiers the Solo The Fountain of Youth in Sweden and gives a series of lecture performances on dance and age(ing): German Dance Congress, Düsseldorf; Werkstattgespräch Ambivalenz und soziale Praxis, Universität Münster; Society for Dance Research, Middlesex University;  Werkstattgespräch Dialog der Generationen, Berlin.

2011 to 2016 She is a doctoral researcher in the UK, exploring the relationship between dancing and ageing in contemporary improvisation-based dance, questioning how dance improvisation as a critical artistic practice interrogates and (re)informs understandings of bodily subjects within politics of ageing.

2011 to 2012 she conducts, curates and performes in the performance series Susi & Gabi’s Salon in collaboration with Gabriele Reuter and changing guest performers in Germany and the UK.

2010 she tours the improvisational trio performance Hoppalappa – postfolki tanzi teateri together with Bronja Novak and Katarina Eriksson, as well as the piece Zuhause with Theater M21.

2009 she is artist in residence at Critical Path in Sydney, Australia and receives her MA  from HZT Berlin (Inter-University Center for Dance Berlin).

2001 – 2010  She creates and performs several performances together with Bronja Novak, which tour extensively. she performes and collaborates with Theater M21, Göttingen under the direction of Achim von Burchard. She also creates several solo works that tour internationally.

Profile:

Susanne Martin (PhD) is a choreographer, performer, researcher, and teacher in the field of contemporary dance and performance. Her solo performances and collaborative works are being presented internationally. Her research and artistic practice focuses on improvisation as a crucial practice within contemporary dance, narrations of the aging body, humour and irony in dance, and performance as research. In her teaching she currently focusses on contact improvisation, instant composition, and improvisation-based workout.

She has been a guest lecturer at the following institutions: Middlesex University, UK; University of Northampton, UK; University of Roehampton, UK; Bowdoin College Brunswick, USA; Budapest Contemporary Dance Academy (BCDA), Hungary.

 

Recent activities:

In 2016 she completed her university funded Practice as Research PhD at Middlesex University London, and in 2017 she published her doctoral thesis Dancing Age(ing): Rethinking Age(ing) in and through Improvisation Practice and Performance. This research argues that specific approaches to a long-term, open-ended dance practice, alongside critical images and new imaginations of age(ing) in performance, allow dance to evolve as an age critical arts practice. Her piece Von der Schönheit und Seltsamkeit des Anlehens, co-choreographed with Eliane Hutmacher (2017) won in the German national competion Tanztreffen der Jugend. In collaboration with Marlène Colle she hosts and curates 7 minutes of fame, a monthly performance evening in the traditional Berlin corner bar Stammtisch (since 2016 ongoing).
